Diagnostics and check engine lights

A code tells us which system is unhappy. It does not tell us which part failed. We test until we know, then we call you with the answer and the price before any repair starts.

Why a code is only the start

Plug a scanner into any car built after 1996 and it will give you a code like P0171 or P0420. Parts stores will read that for free, and it is useful. But P0171 means the engine is running lean. That can be a cracked intake hose, a dirty mass airflow sensor, a weak fuel pump or a vacuum leak behind the manifold. Replace the wrong one and the light comes back in a week.

Diagnostics has been one of the things King's is known for since the shop opened. The job is to go from the code to the one part that is actually at fault, and to prove it before anything gets ordered.

Live data from the car tells us far more than the stored code does.

What we do during a diagnostic

  • Talk to you first. When it happens, how often, hot or cold, at speed or idling. This narrows things down faster than any tool.
  • Read stored and pending codes from the engine, transmission, ABS, airbag and body modules.
  • Watch live sensor data while the engine runs, and on a road test when the problem only shows up while driving.
  • Test the suspect part directly: smoke testing for vacuum leaks, voltage and ground checks, fuel pressure, compression where it is needed.
  • Call you with what we found, what it will cost to fix, and what can wait.

Warning lights we look at every week

Check engine, ABS, traction control, airbag, battery and charging, oil pressure, tire pressure and the newer driver assistance warnings. We also chase the problems that do not turn on any light at all, like a car that hesitates when you merge onto the 417, a stall at a red light or a battery that is flat every Monday morning.

A flashing check engine light is different

A steady light means book an appointment. A flashing light usually means the engine is misfiring badly enough to damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration and get it to us, or call Tow Kings at (613) 276-4714 if the car is shaking or losing power.

What it costs

$120Diagnostic, booked as a one hour appointment. Prices are before tax.

Most faults are found within that time. If a problem is intermittent or buried deep in the wiring, we will tell you before going further, and nothing extra happens without your okay.

Questions about
diagnostics

Can I drive with the check engine light on?

If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually drive it to the shop. If the light is flashing, or the car is shaking, overheating or losing power, stop driving it and call us or Tow Kings.

The parts store read my code for free. Why pay for a diagnostic?

The free read gives you the code. A diagnostic tells you which part caused it. The same code can point to five different failures, and guessing gets expensive quickly.

How much is a diagnostic at King’s?

The diagnostic is $120 before tax, booked as a one hour appointment. We call you with the findings and a repair price before any work is done.

Do you diagnose electrical problems?

Yes. Dead batteries that keep coming back, lights and gauges that act up, windows and locks, charging faults and wiring damage. Parasitic drain testing is part of that.

Do you work on European and import cars?

Yes. BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia and the rest, along with domestic cars, trucks and vans.
